The Book of Daniel

NBC is promoting "The Book of Daniel" as a serious drama about Christian people and the Christian faith. The main character is Daniel Webster, a drug-addicted Episopal priest whose wife depends heavily on her mid-day martinis. The Webster family is rounded out by a 23- year old homosexual Republican, a 16-year old daughter who is a drug dealer, and a 16-year-old adopted son who is having sex with the bishop's daughter. At the office, his lesbian secretary is sleeping with his sister in law.

NBC considers The Book of Daniel a positive portrayal of Christ and Christians.
What do you think?
a. Is NBC correct that this TV show is an accurate portrayal of Christ and Christians?
b. Why do you think a major TV network would make a show like this?
c. Why do you think the show lets you know that the son is a Republican?
d. Is this show meant to have a moral, spiritual or intellectual worth?

  • I chose choice B. I think that a major TV network would show a show like that because today the world is so full of pornographic movies and shows, and it is filled with all sorts of bad stuff that would try to make American children look like the biggest little sluts and hoes walkin around on the streets. And some kids look at shows like that for some kind of guidance on life. Shows like this would lead some kids to not be good modeled citizens of the US. Sorry if I've offended anyone but this is the real America!

  • a.-NO, NBC is NOT right! That has nothing to do with the Christian life. In that summary of the show I did not see one thing about God or Christianity! They need to stop showing nasty stuff like that because there are little kids flipping channels for cartoons or something and something nasty like that might come on! Then they'll wonder what it is and then they will watch it and learn BAD stuff and then they might grow up that way! Then the world would end up being a big mess! I think that if this show isn't going to be Christian then they should just change the name. The only thing this has to do with the book of Daniel is that his name is Daniel. They are just trying to turn us away from God and that's just not going to work!

  • I choose A. I don't think that NBC is correct, this movie does not show an accurate portrayal of Christ and Christians. All that this movie is showing is that there is a lot of people out in the world who act like this everyday. More than likley all the people that act like this claim that they are Christians and they belive in Christ. The people who claim they are Christians are probably doing all of this in real life.

  • I think this show is stupid! I think it's saying is that all people that go to church are hipocrits. Sorry but NO!!!! Yes, some people that go to church just go to say they do, but not ALL people that go to church are hipocrits. If even 50% of people went to church for the right reason, this world would be a better place, but it's not. That's reality. What you see on T.V. is what people WISHED our life was like. Not even reality shows are like what people go through day-to-day, especially Christians. We Christians get made fun of so much. We get called names, left out of things,ETC. Some people are scared to be Christians because they are afraid they'll get made fun of or left out. I'm sick of Christians being made fun of. I understand that people have different religions or no religion at all, but just because you have no religion or a different religion than someone else doesn't mean you can critisize that person for it. Also, people need to quit watching T.V. and step back in to reality because trust me, if you think your life can be like a T.V. show you are BAD wrong. Real life is hard... get a helmet!!!

  • A. I think that those people are not christians. Maybe they were saved or went to church once or something but if they act like that they have no relationship with God at all. So maybe that show is accurate about people that are supposedly christians but real christians don't act like that.

  • I think that this pathetic excuse for a show is NOT an accurate potrayal of a christian life. I think that it is an accurate portrayal of a non-christian's life going horribly wrong. Cricket23: I agree with you people need to stop making fun of christians and forgetting about other religions. I mean excuse me but what does your money say on it? What did our founding fathers build this counrty on? We would not be free if it weren't for our religion because the only reason people moved out of England was to worship our God freely. Okay I'm sorry if my words are mixing and I'm not making much sense but I'm too angry to think of how much I do not agree with this show.

  • I always hope that that is not the case with christians but unfortunatley in todays world we are not portrayed as the people we are supposed to be.(I am extremely sad that we do bring it uppon ourselves more than half the time with things like gay popes and so on.)We no longer think that we are supposed to be in the world and not of it, we are of a self centered cultured. I could see why a major TV network would put somthing like that out. I dont think that it was right but you see "christians" today and you cant tell the difference between them and the rest of the world, and you cant help but think that the show was the tiniest bit accurate. I know that not all christians are like that but if we dont want people to think of us like that then we need to clean up our act.

  • B. This is a time where a lot of people turn away from God. Lots of people will make shows like "The Book of Daniel" because they want to show people what they think CHRISTianity is all about. Lots of people will watch this show and this is what they will think "If this is what being a christian is about than I guess I'm a christian already." because they already do all those things shown in The Book of Daniel. I'm not trying to push christianity on you, but the bible teaches against premarriage sex and being lesbian.

  • I choose b.and d.. What is the reason for this show? IT seems so dumb and stupid, and no reason for it besides to basiclly make fun of christians. I so totally agree with: "Cricket23". To me this show is dumb and should not be played.

  • I think that the idea of making a show like that is dumb. They should not make a show unless they are sure they have the right idea. They are just trying to make most of the uneducated childern who dont go to church to believe what they say is right. I also agree with "cricket23" on this one.

  • Hey guys it's me again,

Ok, there is nothing about God and Jesus Christ related in this movie,(and sorry to get all religiousie) but no unclean thing can dwell in the presence of God. Do you think that Jesus Christ or God would be in the room while one is watching this movie???!!! Absolutley not! Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't things like drugs, alchohol, homosexuals, and having sex before your married, and lesbianism, and every thing else that they are putting in here, is against everything that Heavenly Father (oops soory, that is what my church calls God) and Jesus Christ encourage us to do?! Yes, so why on the flippin earth would somebody put that on the television? It just blows my mind!
