Violation of Amendment 1?

Recently a picture similar to this one was taken out of a school on the grounds that it violates Amendment #1. The caption of this painting is George Washington Praying at Valley Forge

Select a question to express your Second Opinion

a- How do you see that this picture violates the first amendment?
b- Why should this picture be allowed in a school?
c- Why should a history teacher use this picture in his classroom?
d- Why is it offensive to an athiest student if this picture is allowed to be on display in a history classroom?

  • I think that the picture should be allowed in school because it is a part in History. The teacher probably would need to use that picture to help teach their lesson.

  • I think it should be in a history room, because the admendments have to do with the history. And I don't think it is a violation of admendment 1, because George Washington is praying, but it's not like the kids are going to go up to the poster and start praying with the poster.

  • I think it doesn't violate any amendment. I think the picture is good for school because it isn't violating any rules. If you do have something against it than just think of it as a historical picture of George Washington at Valley Forge. A history teacher can use this in his classroom to show a historical picture.

  • This picture should be allowed because HELLO, in most religions you pray! In Amendment One it says we have freedom of religion...it seems like they are taking that away from us! A history teacher should use it because it shows more about Valley Forge. What the scenary was like and things like that. It should be allowed! If they don't like it, they can just close their eyes!

  • I do not think that this picture is a violation of Amendment 1. I think it SHOULD be allowed to be presented in classrooms. This picture is representing a very important moment in history. No one said that the people that do not believe in praying or in God had to look at the picture. If you think that it is violating the constitution you should wake up and smell the roses because George Washington risked his life for you. You should appreciate him enough to hang a picture of him on the wall.

  • Ok why shoudn't a picture of our history be in schools I don't see the problem with it it just George Washington praying for valleyforge.
I'm just saying we were here way before any of the other people that are from countrys. so if they can't handle the picture then pack your bags and get out of America we shouldn't have to change just for you!

  • Hey, I think that this picture should be aloud in our classes in all schools, becasue freedom of religion, duh!!! Plus, why would you even have a doubt in your mind that there is a God?! There is a God, and if just about 99.9% of the rest of the world believes at least in some God, to them, it may not be the god that we believe in, but at least they believe in a God. But whether or not that picture is hanging in my house over my couch, it should be aloud in all schools.

  • I think that the picture should be allowed in schools because as ugtwrilgirl 2010 said Amendment 1 one says that we have a freedom of religon. In most schools they wouldn't allow it because he is praying but, it is a part of history and if it is a part of history then it should be put in a history book or a History class. If the people in the school don't like then they just shouldn't look at it if they don't like it. They could turn a way from the picture or just not look at it at all.

  • I think the picture should be in a history class because it shows the religion of one of our for fathers. I mean we know everything else about them why not there religion? I a different religion student is insulted by it then they don't have to look.

  • There is nothing wrong with this picture. If a teacher showed a picture of someone worshipping a false god then no one would get mad. Peole are just trying to force God out of our lives. Well, I think they need to shutup and mind their own buisiness. I am a christian and there is nothing they can do about it to change it.

  • I agree with ugtwirlgirl2010. The picture doesn't violate the amendment because it's not like it's specifying in the picture what religion he takes part in. Although most of us would assume he's Christian, we can't correctly assume anything because Hindus, Buddists, and other religions pray just like we do - even though we don't worship the same people. He might even simply have chosen this unusual way to rest his hands and leg. I mean, who's to say he's even praying. Lol.

  • Why should this picture be allowed in a school?
This is a picture of the first president, the first authority figure, kneeling down praying. He sets an example for other people that there is nothing wrong with praying. Even if you are the highest authority figure.
Why is it offensive to an athiest student if this picture is allowed to be on display in a history classroom?
To an athiest, it is going against everything that they believe or don't believe in. They see a famous authority figure and think differently about them.

  • I think it should be used in History because I think it would be a good lesson for the 1st Amendment. And it also is tlaking about the things that are happining these days. And George Washington is so Famous for what he has done so he should be able to pray at Vally Forge for "HIS TROUPS".

  • I don't think it is violating Amendment One, but that's just me. It's a part of our history. It's just like taking out a picture of Abe Lincoln out of the classroom. It's just stupid!! What's so wrong with it? Just because he's praying doesn;t mean it should be taken out of school.

  • The cartoon isn't violating the first amendment,I mean he's praying for the safety of his troops. He whants them to be safe and not die freezing to death because they didn't have any cloths to wear. And plus it represents an important moment in American History.i Mean why would it be a violation of the first amendment. The first amendment says that we have the right to exercise afree religion, right to the freedom of press, and I think the right to petition the goverment for wrongs that they have done to us or the nation. So my opinion is that this cartoon doesn't violate the first amendment,Imean did the goverment ever tell us that we couldn't print any cartoon that has religion in it,NO THEY DIDN'T
